Boston Scientific Recovery Continues After August Cyberattack

Boston Scientific is restoring systems after detecting a cyber intrusion on Aug. 25 that caused a network outage and disrupted its global manufacturing, customer order processing and shipping.

The company disclosed the incident on Aug. 26 and engaged external cybersecurity firms, including CrowdStrike, to investigate and help recover affected systems.

Boston Scientific reported the breach appears limited to some on-premises IT systems and that it has not observed additional malicious activity on its networks since Aug. 25. The company has not provided a full timeline for complete restoration but said it hopes to resume partial product shipping this week.

Internal network disruptions halted or slowed manufacturing lines, delayed processing of customer orders and interrupted shipping workflows worldwide. The company’s devices and therapies include products used in cardiology, neurology and oncology.

Boston Scientific stated that implanted cardiac rhythm management devices already in patients were not affected. The incident did temporarily disrupt new remote activations for certain cardiac monitors.

Investigators have not identified a perpetrator and no group has claimed responsibility. External cybersecurity teams are assisting with forensic analysis, containment and remediation. The company has given limited detail on which specific systems were impacted and the scope of any data exposure.

Company officials prioritized restoring systems that support manufacturing and order fulfillment. Customers and supply-chain partners have been notified of service interruptions and possible delays. Boston Scientific did not offer an estimated date for full operational recovery.
