Balance Theory raises $19M to expand cybersecurity spending platform

Balance Theory raised $19 million in a Series A led by SYN Ventures to expand a platform that helps CISOs evaluate and manage cybersecurity spending.

Balance Theory, a Columbia, Maryland-based startup, raised $19 million in a Series A round led by SYN Ventures to expand its software platform for chief information security officers to evaluate and manage cybersecurity spending. Existing investors DataTribe and TEDCO participated. The company previously raised $3 million in seed funding in 2022 and did not disclose a post-money valuation.

The platform combines investment planning, market intelligence and procurement execution into a single system that holds contextual information about an organization’s security program. Balance Theory supplements that context with proprietary market data and deploys AI-driven agents and automated workflows to support purchasing decisions and ongoing portfolio management.

The system records the rationale behind each security investment and monitors for changes that could affect an investment’s value, suitability or priority. Balance Theory reports its technology currently manages more than $1 billion in cybersecurity spending.

The company said the new financing will fund go-to-market expansion, deeper integrations with enterprise systems, growth of its cybersecurity market intelligence and continued development of its AI agents and automated workflows.

Dan Burns, founder of Accuvant and former CEO of Optiv, joined Balance Theory as executive chairman and will focus on enterprise partnerships and strategic growth initiatives.

Greg Baker, the company’s co-founder and chief executive, described the problem the product addresses: “Security leaders lacked a consistent way to understand their own enterprise, navigate an increasingly complex market and connect those insights to action.”

Balance Theory did not disclose customer names. The company said the platform integrates with existing security and procurement systems to automate workflows and provide continuous reassessment of spending.
