Boston Scientific detected a cybersecurity incident on Aug. 25 that caused network outages and disrupted order processing and shipping; an investigation is ongoing.

Boston Scientific confirmed a cybersecurity incident detected on Aug. 25 that caused a network outage and disrupted access to some IT systems and business applications across its global operations.

The company posted on its website that the outage affected operating systems and business applications, including its ability to process and ship customer orders. “The incident has impacted access to certain operating systems and business applications, including the ability to process and ship customer orders,” the notice reads.

An SEC filing added that investigators are still determining the full scope, nature and impact of the incident and that the company cannot provide a timeline for full restoration. “The Company’s investigation of the cybersecurity incident is ongoing, and the full scope, nature and impacts, including operational and financial impacts, of the incident are not yet known,” the filing stated.

Boston Scientific did not specify whether the incident involved ransomware, extortion or other malicious software, nor did it disclose whether patient, employee or customer data was accessed or removed. No cybercriminal group has claimed responsibility.

The company said it took steps to contain the issue after detection and has begun an investigation, but it did not provide technical details about the entry point, exploited vulnerability or which specific systems were affected beyond the general operational impacts it described.

Boston Scientific manufactures devices and therapies used in cardiology, neurology, oncology and other interventional procedures. The company noted that potential operational and financial impacts are not yet known and that it will provide updates as more information becomes available.
